Petroleos Mexicanos was created in 1938 as the sole company in Mexico in charge of the exploration, production, refining and marketing of oil.  Seventy five years later, in 2013, the Energy Reform is promulgated by the Mexican federal government to increase oil production and provide Pemex with the necessary regulatory framework and resources to modernize itself; a year later the Law of Petroleos Mexicanos is issued and opens up the energy sector to other companies.  This law also establishes Pemex as a new productive enterprise of the state and sets the framework for the creation of additional subsidiary productive enterprises.
